Haematology (Blood)
Haematology is the branch of medicine that deals with the study of blood and blood disorders. This branch also includes the treatment of blood malignancies and diseases, including lymphoma, leukaemia, haemophilia and sickle-cell anaemia.
Haematologists primarily focus on bone marrow and lymphatic organs and can also detect blood count or platelet irregularities, as well as treat blood-feeding organs, including the lymphoid tissue and lymph nodes.
Other diseases diagnosed and treated by haematologists are:
- Myelofibrosis
- Iron deficiency anaemia
- Excessive production of red blood cells (Polycythemia)
- Platelet and bleeding disorders
- Multiple myeloma
- Blood transfusion
- Malignant lymphomas
- Bone marrow transplant
- The myelodysplastic syndrome
- Hemoglobinopathies
Haematology Tests
The most common test done by a haematologist is the complete blood count (CBC). This test is often performed during a physical exam and can detect clotting problems, anaemia, infections, immune system problems and even blood cancers. Other tests include:
- Blood chemistry
- Blood enzyme tests
- Blood tests to diagnose risks of heart disease
